Hello

I worked Portage Crew from 1964 to 1969 under Park Superintendant Ross Williams
I stopped in often to see Carl and Lillian Johnson the Park Rangers at Lac La Croix
They stayed in the old log cabin - torn down before Joe and Vera arrived to replace them
I have not heard Carl and Lillians name mentioned in many of the write ups on old Park Ranger folks
They were great folks
I also remember the first day Wilbur Hyatt arrived flown in to Prarie Portage
Gary Isburg was the Park Ranger there at that time
Myself and partner took Wibur by boat to Cabin 16 and showed him around
He was nervous about lake travel and wore a big life jacket on the way down.
Berniece arrived later.

Don McClure and wife were the Park Rangers at Cache Bay for years as well - a real character
Jon Bouchard replaced him and was station there for years

You may know all of this but I never read any mention of the McClures or Johnsons

After Portage Crew I lived at Camp 111 for several years - first as a Timber Scaler for the Lands and Forest and later for Domtar Woodlands Division when they were still logging in the Northeast portion of the Park during winter months. I found it strange that most articles failed to metion this since it also is part of Quetico's

Hello to David Williams (contributer above) son of Mr Ross Williams - he and his twin brother Lloyd and mother and father were close family friends.

Last year I went on a solo canoe trip from Mount Lake close to Atikokan ending at Kenora
Canoeing is in my blood and planning another soon
I have lived in BC since 1973 working on the Coast as a Area Engineer in Haida Gwaii and Central Vancouver Island but my heart has always been in Quetico Park where I spend many years.
I lived across the highway from Nym Lake having moved to our newly built house in 1957.
Quetico is very dear to me and my roots - growing up in the woods there
Hello to Joe and Vera Meany and my congratulations on their long time serve to Quetico and their retirement. I understand their love for Quetico

I am a member of the Rainy River First Nations (Manitou Rapids) and i work at the Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung Historical Center. I happened to be doing some research on our site one day and the photo of the three little children in their traditional dress as well as the little white boy caught my eye. After clicking on the photo i was very intrigued to discover the photo was taken in Manitou Rapids and the story of Bob and Leone was of great interest to me. I managed to speak to Bob after contacting him by telephone which was like stepping back in time for me because Bob was kind enough to share some valuable information about the history of my community. My wife Melonee and i are excited to meet Bob and Leone as we were invited to visit with them at their home in Winton. Miigwech Bob and Leone.

Hello
My life time friend Scotty Baxter of Thunder Bay - grew up in Atikokan - sent me your book Quetico
Quetico is dear to your heart - so is mine - I was raise in the woods across the highway from Nym Lake - at Fire Lake - moved there 1957 - so Quetico being in my backyard was part of me.
Lived at Burdette Lake north of Emo prior to that - born in Fort Frances 1946
Worked Portage Crew from 1964 to 69
Ross Williams was Park Superintendant - this was years before many of the people you mention
Knew many of the old timers - all passed away
Worked and lived as a timber scaler in Camp 111 until 1973 - went to BC - worked Haida Gwaii for 12 years as logging engineer - later on Vancouver Island

I am currently writing down all of my memories from that time and recalled finding two small cabins along the east shoreline 1968 - may be destroyed by now
They of course were just low 1' rectangled mounds from the long rotted log walls - covered in moss and mature trees - barely noticeable - I dug a small hole in the corner of one and discovered what I assumed to be 2 led musket balls - they were encrusted with an oxidised whitish shell. don't know what I did with them. Never got back and told any one about them - there has to be some historical significance I used to offer all my findings to the French lake museum but were often stolen from the show cases
There was a temporary residence building lived in by campsite attendant Eugine Borgoine (now long deceaced) frenchman like Emile Thevierge (also an attendant / handyman)
The cabins were near the shoreline just north of his place. probably gone by now.
I was reading that you spent 6 summers conducting Archaeological research in Quetico - so your the guy to tell this to. There are other sites as well - another time maybe
I helped Wibur into the boat at Prarie Portage for his first trip down Basswood Lake to Cabin 16 - He had his life jacket tied on tight and very nervous about being out on the water. Bernice wasn't with at the time. He is from the farm country west part of Rainy River District - not used to water
Knew Carl and Lillian Johnson (good friends) of Lac La Croix Ranger Station - they lived in the log building then - before Joe and Vera's time
Gary Isberg was in charge of Prarie Portage at the time - he and Bruce Littlejohn did Portage Crew before me.
Attended the 100th year birthday Celebration of Quetico at French Lake and Atikokan Hall - I think you were MC and mentioned my name - thanks for that
I was with Bob Asselin and Gordon McCuaig also Portage Crew from that era
Bob was the Junior Ranger Super at French Lake for a number of years - buildings were across the highway from Campsite entrance
Let me know what you think of the cabins

Yep wingspans of 7 feet... spent quite a bit of time in Cold Lake AB, and the large ravens up there, that come down from the north in winter, average 6 1/2 wing spans. The would congregate around the hockey arena in the mornings, and we would walk AROUND them to get to school. We walked around them until about the age of 8 or 9. They showed absolutely no fear from us as little kids, they stood at what appeared to be 2 to 3 feet tall, and until we were mature enough, grew evil enough or intelligent enough, they seemed to realize that they were intellectually superior to us, physically large enough to not be intimidated by us, and that we had not yet matured to the point of learning how to become ruthless. No fear...

Hi Jon
Amazing... Amazing. Love everyone of them. Makes me even more proud of our Atikokan! Your perspective is wonderful, thank you for creating this body of work.
I can imagine how new medium transposing your photographs to metal would create a 3D effect. I have a hard time selecting a favourite.
I would love to promote these for sale in Atikokan ~ Quetico Trading Post. I will send my request in a separate email.
Keep up the great work my friend.

I have recently been in touch with Bob, as he and I come from the same "family tree", although his branch had been kind of lost. While living here in Kenora, I delved harder into this branch, and have found a treasure trove of relatives, with Bob being a shining star. So pleased to read your article here. THanks for the research and the care with which this was written.

Really good writing, Jon, a pleasure to read, and yes, full of good stuff. In my own work I call this topic "Volopolis," as I first stumbled on it (literally) in the spring, snow just melted, all these tunnels and stacks of chopped grass and suddenly it all clicked--voles made this!

I feed a large flock of ravens every morning here in the northern CA mountains. The local grocery provides me with fat scraps they would normally toss out. If I'm up earlier than usual to feed them I try animitation of their call and soon they can be heard "gathering."

Question: why do they hop about so much, almost as though getting ready for flight?

I really enjoyed reading your site!

I have never seen ravens of that size in my travels, the ravens in northwestern Ontario have wing spans up to five feet. Ravens may be larger than that in Greenland but I'd be surprised if they had wing spans of up to 7 feet. If you go back be sure to ask locals about the size of their ravens.

I enjoyed your article which I came upon while searching for corroborating stories to my having seen many huge ravens while working in Thule Greenland. There are those who believe that I am exaggerating when I claim to have seen them with a wing span of 6-7 feet. Have you heard of this?
Best

As a descendant of members of the Lac La Croix First Nation, and the granddaughter of Dorothy Powell, I grew up hearing stories of Benny Ambrose, Jock Richardson, and the rest of the Saganaga Lake settlers. I was fortunate to know Shirley, and I'm thankful that her fascinating works include my family's history.

I think the HDR image gives an "other-worldly look" more than what my eye might see. But I do really like them. They are more artistic than regular photography.

Jon-

Carol shared your pictures with us. They are absolutely beautiful! You do a great job - the quality is great! Steve especially like the picture of Holy Trinity. It's where he went to grade school and where our kids were all confirmed from.

Take care - hope to see you and Marie sometime soon.
